Cold sore treatment in Saratoga Springs

If cold sores keep showing up on your lip, you do not have to just wait them out. Your dentist can help you treat a flare and plan for the next one.

Can a dentist help with cold sores?

Yes. Cold sores come from a common virus that stays in your body and wakes up now and then. Your dentist cannot remove the virus, but can suggest or prescribe medicine that may help a sore heal sooner, hurt less and show up less often.

  • Cold sores are also called fever blisters
  • Medicine tends to work best when you start it early
  • Kids, teens and adults can all get them

Who may want help with cold sores

Lots of people get a cold sore once in a while and never think much about it. Others get them so often that they plan their lives around them. A visit can make sense if any of these sound like you:

  • You get several cold sores a year
  • Your sores are large, slow to heal or very sore
  • Store-bought creams have not done much for you
  • A sore tends to pop up before a big event, a trip or a stressful week
  • Sun, a cold or a rough stretch of sleep seems to set one off

Your dentist will look at the area, ask how often sores appear and what seems to trigger them, and check your health history. From there, you will talk about whether medicine makes sense and how to use it.

What to expect

  1. Talk it through. Tell us when your sores started, how long they last and what you have tried so far.
  2. A quick look. Your dentist checks your lips and mouth to make sure the spot looks like a cold sore and not something else.
  3. A plan that fits you. This may be a cream, a pill or both. Some people keep medicine on hand so they can start it at the first tingle.
  4. Check back in. If the plan is not helping as much as you hoped, let us know so we can adjust it.

Most people can feel a cold sore coming before they see it. You may notice tingling, itching or burning on your lip a day or so ahead. That early window is often a smart time to start treatment.

Living with cold sores day to day

  • Keep your hands off the sore, and wash them if you touch it
  • Skip kissing and sharing cups, forks or lip balm until the sore fully heals
  • Use a lip balm with sunscreen when you spend time outside
  • When you feel worn out, give yourself extra sleep and downtime
  • Toss a toothbrush you used during a flare once the sore clears up

If a sore spreads near your eye or you get them all the time, tell your dentist or your doctor.

Cost and insurance

Your cost depends on the care you need and your dental plan. After your exam, we give you an estimate and go over what your insurance is likely to cover before any treatment starts. We work with most major dental plans and accept CareCredit.

FAQ

Questions about cold sore treatment

Should I still come to my cleaning if I have a cold sore?
Give us a call first. Stretching your lips open for dental work can split an open sore and help it spread, and it can pass to others. In many cases it is better to move your visit until the sore heals.
Are cold sores the same as canker sores?
No. Cold sores show up on or around the lips and are caused by a virus. Canker sores form inside the mouth, are not caused by that virus and do not spread from person to person.
How long does a cold sore last?
Many heal in about one to two weeks. Medicine started early may shorten that time and make the sore less painful.
Can I spread a cold sore to someone else?
Yes. The virus passes through close contact, like kissing or sharing a drink. You are most likely to spread it while a sore is open or weeping.
Does insurance cover a cold sore visit?
An exam is often covered, and your medical or drug plan may help with medicine. Check our insurance page or ask our team to look into your benefits.
